Discourse: A solo exhibition of abstract art by artist Julie Saul
My work is an amalgamation of everyday experiences, observations, memory and conversations. I have a background in graphic design and I am interested in text and communication and how it passes through change from one state to another. The paintings consist of the richness and intensity of colour through layering, revealing and concealing of colours beneath each layer, by Scratching and Scraping back the paint I use texture and mark-making to create a sense of depth. Text becomes illegible obscuring any point of reference, which enables the viewer to discover new meaning.
My process involves ways of using paint and finding ways they can coexist. I work in the studio and at home on several pieces at a time, each painting informing the other.
