Memories of an Indian Childhood with Sita Brand @ Halton Mill
Oct 19 @ 7:30 pm

Memories of an Indian Childhood

By Sita Brand

An extraordinary personal story mixed with traditional tales.

Be transported to Bombay… dusty, crowded and vibrant…

Welcome to Sita’s world of large families, stubborn hairdos and romantic train journeys. Slowly the light-hearted stories about friendships and games give way to darker more painful memories. Her father’s gruelling exodus at the onset of World War II and later the Indian emergency, precipitating the need to leave India and come to Britain.

Atmospheric, intimate, funny and moving, Memories of an Indian Childhood is an autobiographical show in which Sita’s own experience of growing up in India is intertwined with the folk tales that influenced her childhood and is consummately told by Sita Brand.

Advance tickets £10/£8. On the door £12/£10

LUNG in association with Leeds Playhouse
By Helen Monks and Matt Woodhead

“Why should I continue to be tolerant? When the world has been so intolerant of me.”

Amnesty International Freedom of Expression and Fringe First Award winners LUNG (E15, The 56 and Chilcot) follows the real life stories of Muslim teachers and governors who were accused of plotting extremism in Birmingham schools.

Trojan Horse was a local story that hit the national press, accusing ‘hardline’ Muslim teachers and governors of plotting extremism in Birmingham schools. Adapted from the real-life testimonies of those at the heart of the UK

Government’s inquiry, critically acclaimed theatre company LUNG investigate what really happened. Originally developed with Leeds Playhouse, Trojan Horse is the story of a community torn apart by racial division, ‘British values’ and the culture of Prevent.

Making theatre with communities, by communities and for communities, LUNG is a national touring theatre company, developing innovative and politically driven work that broadens horizons and investigates modern Britain.

This play is based on real life events but some names have been changed. It is adapted from over 200 hours of interviews conducted by LUNG as well as public documents and contains words spoken by individuals who participated in public hearings, it is not endorsed or authorised by them.

“Perhaps the bravest and most astutely political of shows on up in Edinburgh this year in LUNG’s Trojan Horse. Piercing, relevant, terrifying and beautifully told…”
