Artist Call Out: Keep A Light On

Keep A Light On (KALO)

Open Call for Projects

Artists in Lancaster district are invited to submit project proposals for KALO

About KALO
It will invoke the spirit of Lancaster’s much-loved annual Light Up Lancaster (LUL) at a time when people cannot celebrate together socially as a community.
It will support local artists, businesses and communities and inspire hope for the future when we can gather again for larger events.

KALO is a high-quality light art project to be delivered in November and December 2020.

KALO will embody creative collaboration: between artists and businesses in the heart of Lancaster city centre.
To sustain the spirit and continuity of Lancashire’s much loved and locally owned LUL festival, KALO will support Lancaster district artists, businesses and communities at a critical time when Covid-19 inhibits people enjoying cultural events together in the usual way.

KALO will be a magical, high quality, creative celebration of light art, inspiring hope for a brighter future, when we can all gather again for larger events.
With support from key partners, KALO will be a ‘deliverable’, safe alternate to staging an event and will resonate with families and communities across the city this winter. It will be creative, memorable project that will reflect hope, togetherness and happiness throughout November and December.
Light art will underscore the project:

Call For Light Art Projects
3 professional commissions are available.
Utilising 3 empty shop units in Lancaster city centre, 3 local artists/collectives will each create magical, illuminated installations. A new installation will appear in empty shop windows in Lancaster, without fanfare, on each Friday in November and remain it situ through to the New Year.
Advice on available shops will be given. Projects should be installations that respond to and explore the rationale for KALO.
All projects should have light as an integral feature of the work and must be suitable for a family audience.
A maximum fee of up to £2,000 is available for each of the selected installations and there is an additional £250 available for materials for each piece of work. Some limited technical support, provided by The Dukes, will be available for each successful application.

Our Process
All proposals will be assessed by the KALO partnership and will be assessed on these criteria: artistic quality, ambition and innovation, financial and logistical viability, value for money and connections to our guiding rationale for KALO.

Key dates:
2 October (12 noon) – Closing date for proposals
By October 9 – Offers made

KALO is delivered by a partnership made up of The Dukes, Lancaster Business Improvement District (BID), Lancaster City Council and is managed and directed by a freelance Producer.
